Canada currently allows the live export of horses to other countries for slaughter. Tens of thousands horses are shipped to countries, usually Japan every year. They are crammed into small shipping containers, with no room to move. Most of the horses are sick and malnourished before before entering the shipping containers. Many horses die along the journey due to stress, untreated health conditions, disease, and lack of food and water. The auction industry is corrupt. The public and meat buyers go to auctions where people send their unwanted horses. The meat buyers usually buy around 90% of the horses at the auction. Mare and foals are separated for profit, and most of the horses are clearly in distress. No photographs or videos are allowed at the auctions. If they catch you taking videos, or photos you will be banned. Some horse rescues go to these auctions and attempt to save as many horses as possible. The rescued horses are often in horrific condition and are emaciated. In the recent year there has been growing pressure on the government to ban the live export of horses, and the Liberal government promised in their 2020 campaign to ban the live export. Pressure needs to be kept on the government. No animal deserves to die covered in feces and urine, sick and scared, unable to move or lie down, in a small, dark shipping container.
